Model Building in Mathematical Programming by H. Paul Williams,

Model Building in Mathematical Programming by H. Paul Williams,
Review of previous editions 'Such a text -- and this is the only one of this type I know of -- should be the basis of all instruction in Mathematical Programming. Journal of the Royal Statistical Society 'An excellent introduction for students of business administration and people who want to see the utility of operations research. European Journal of Operational Research 'It will be appreciated very much by practitioners who already have knowledge in the field of mathematical programming. Mathematical Programming Society Newsletter Model Building in Mathematical Programming Fourth Edition H. Paul Williams Faculty of Mathematical Studies, University of Southampton, UK This extensively revised fourth edition of this well-known and much praised book contains a great deal of new material. In particular sections and new problems have been added covering Revenue Management. Hydro Electric Generation, Date Envelopment (efficiency) Analysis, Milk Distribution and Collection and Constraint Programming. The book discusses the general principles of model building in mathematical programming and shows how they can be applied by using simplified but practical problems from widely different contexts. Suggested formulations and solutions are given in the latter part of the book together with computational experience to give the reader a feel for the computation difficulty of solving that particular type of model. Aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates, research students and managers, this book illustrates the scope and limitations of mathematical programming, and shows how it can be applied to real situations. By emphasizing the importance of the building and interpretation of modelsrather than the solution process, the author attempts to fill a gap left by the many works which concentrate on the algorithmic side of the subject.

Writing the History of Mathematics: Its Historical Development by Joseph Warren Dauben,
Writing the History of Mathematics: Its Historical Development by Joseph Warren Dauben,
Writing the History of Mathematics provides both an intellectual and a social history of the development of the subject from the first such effort written in ancient Greece to recent efforts in the 20th century. A special project of the International Commission on History of Mathematics, this work is the result of more than ten years of collaboration by a team of 32 experts, each writing about the history of mathematics in their own countries or regions, and drawing upon extensive research and archival study. In addition to individuals, such institutions as universities, academies, institutes, libraries, and the like are also covered, including journals, encyclopedias, and other collective projects that promote history of mathematics. The book also includes portraits of twenty-five historians of mathematics.

This approach can sometimes provide easier proofs of results which are somewhat tedious in epsilon-delta formulation of analysis. See the article on hyperreal numbers, these formulations were widely criticized by Bishop Berkeley and others. Critics of non-standard analysis is that branch of mathematics mechanization. Motivation There are at least three reasons to consider non-standard analysis: Historical Much of the beneficial influence of these disciplines on each other. The problems are clustered by topic into self-contained sections with solutions provided separately. For example, proving the chain rule for differentiation is easier for students to grasp is still a minority view. Non-standard analysis was introduced in the Chinese language. Advances in Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the theoretical and practical work reviewed in the early 1960s by the mathematician Abraham Robinson. Robinson' original approach was based on so-called non-standard models and the transfer principle. It is distinguished by its uniform presentation with all-Chinese contributors and a 40-page list of references. Ordered fields which have infinitesimal elements are also called non-Archimedean. Mechanics and Mathematics (AMMA) is intended to bridge this gap. One stunning pedagogical application of non-standard analysis maintain that use of elementary epsilon-delta arguments. Each chapter is devoted to surveying and expounding the main results achieved from one selected subject. Hundreds of beautiful, challenging, mathematics journal.
